The Kübelwagen is a military vehicle based on the civil Volkswagen 60. The first vehicles were delivered to the German army in 1939. The vehicle was characterised by its great robustness. Around 55,000 were made during the Second World War, in a number of versions. Although its unofficial name was “Kübelsitzwagen” (bucket-seat car), soldiers very soon nicknamed it “Kübelwagen” (bucket car).
On 22 June 1934, by order of Adolf Hitler, Ferdinand Porsche, head of the design office of the same name, was awarded a monthly subsidy of 20,000 reichmarks for the production of an automobile affordable by as many people as possible, a car named the “Volkswagen”, the people's car, by its designer. The vehicle also received the name KdF-Wagen. Subsequently, it was commonly called “Bug” or “Beetle” because of its rounded curves.
The project to produce a lightweight military vehicle based on the KdF-Wagen chassis dated from 1936. The first two prototypes were ordered from Ferdinand Porsche in January 1938 on the basis of a defined specification: carry four persons and their weapons or special equipment on all types of terrain, with a maximum weight of 950 kg.
Our Kübelwagen has been restored with care, in its strict original configuration. Very good general state of presentation and working order. French “Carte grise” registration certificate.
